Buriram is situated in the middle of the Isaan Floodplain, consequently not a mountain nor tight & twisty stretch of road for at least two hours in any direction! However, we'll use this to everyone's mutual advantage, instead of our usual inaugural Day Rides acquainting yourselves with the bike & local traffic conditions, we'll take it easy heading east toward the Mighty Mekong River a couple of hours away, which is where the adventure really starts! From there heading north as far as we're able, pulling up at various attractions along the way, overnight in a great hotel overlooking the river, and into Laos beyond
Day two continuing North, following the river west, a few stops of local interest along the way, Lunch at a great little border town overlooking the hustle & bustle of this busy little port. Continuing West after lunch, gorgeous stretch of road now back to single carriageway, dappled light through the overhanging tree branches keeps us fresh and cool for the afternoon.
Day three we break away from the river & head for the hills! What a cracking run! Single carriageway main road and a favourite of all the local bikers, out in force every weekend! However we're even luckier as it's now midweek, consequently no Sunday Drivers to contend with! Again a few attractions along the way and we'll spend the night in Phu Rhuea, which is quite the (Thai) tourist area come December to February as it's pretty fresh up here! Thais aren't used to feeling cold so this is where many of them take their annual break!!
Day four is a reasonable trek, up to Nan. We're really out back and beyond now, single track lanes for a considerable portion of it, tiny little villages and only one attraction to speak of, small but quite beautiful waterfall. We've hardly seen another vehicle all day but upon arriving here the road is parked up on both sides in both directions! Coffee here and head on. Personally I enjoy taking the ferry over the top of fisherman's village lake, lovely spot to stop for a bite to eat, all depends on how we're getting along though, still plenty of K's to cover.
Day five, Nan returning to Chiang Mai, these bends are gorgeous, IMHO without a doubt top ten roads in the country, probably top five! Sweepers that just seem to go on forever, Grin factor eight! Carriagewaygently widens a little, improves a little town by town, better, faster, better faster until joining the main Chiang Rai - Chiang Mai Route. This goes from dual to single carriageway, smooth, flowing curves with carefully considered radii, three figures, open a little, ease off a little, Thai drivers are so incredibly considerate too, for the most part very aware & switched on, approach ensuring you're well within their mirrors and it's akin to the parting of the Red Sea! Spend so much time thanking everyone, waving so much you almost feel like royalty!
